i. Update of Governance & Reference Documentation
The CoC agreed to revise and modernize IONS governance documents to ensure they remain relevant and effective.
ii. Improvement of Communication Methods
A resolution was passed to explore better communication channels among member navies, enhancing transparency and collaboration.
iii. Formal Relationship with WPNS
The CoC endorsed establishing a formal relationship with the Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS) to strengthen inter-regional naval cooperation.
iv. IONS Maritime Exercises (IMEX)
Iranian Navy-led IMEX focusing on Maritime Security (scheduled between late 2021 and early 2022).
French Navy & Indian Navy-led IMEX focusing on Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief (HADR) (planned for March 2022 off India’s western coast).
v. Chairmanship Transition
The Royal Thai Navy was nominated and endorsed as the next IONS Chair for 2023–2025.
vi. Future Planning Workshop
India was confirmed as host of the next IONS Planning Workshop (IPW) in 2022.
vii. Environmental Security Integration
Though not tied to a single WG, the CoC emphasized integrating environmental security considerations across all IONS activities.
The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) is a voluntary initiative that brings together the navies of the Indian Ocean littoral states. Through dialogue, co-operation, and shared understanding, IONS fosters regional maritime security and stability across one of the world’s most strategic oceanic regions.
